Armada Skatepark, located in Armada Township, Michigan, is a 6,000-square-foot concrete skatepark that opened in 2017. The park was built by SpohnRanch Skateparks, a prominent skatepark design and construction firm, after nearly a decade of advocacy from local community members, including Jacob Gritzinger and Tyler Ross. Their grassroots efforts to create a public skatepark for their small town, located an hour north of Detroit, finally came to fruition after years of fundraising and planning.
The design of the skatepark involved close collaboration with local skateboarders and BMX riders, ensuring that it catered to the needs and preferences of the local extreme sports community. Spohn Ranch integrated a blend of street and transition-style terrain into the design, with features like a 4- to 7.5-foot transition section, a spine, a hitching post, and a bowl that opens into a modern street course. The street section includes an A-frame, ledges, a double set with a hubba, and a handrail, offering a variety of obstacles for different skill levels.
The project was entirely community-driven, with local residents spearheading the fundraising efforts. After years of hard work, the skatepark now serves as a central hub for skateboarders and BMX riders in the area. As a unique touch, the letters "ARMADA" were embedded into one of the concrete embankments, symbolizing the community’s pride in the achievement.
