Ashburton Skatepark, located at Prigg Meadow, Ashburton, was developed through a collaborative community effort spearheaded by a local voluntary group, the Ashburton Rollers. The skatepark project was initiated in 2011 when the Rollers began campaigning and raising funds for a safer, more modern facility for skaters in the area. Over three years, they successfully raised over £125,000 from various sources, including grants from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund, the Dartmoor National Park's Sustainable Development Fund, and contributions from local organizations like Glendinning and the Co-op Community Fund.
The skatepark was designed and built by Maverick Industries, a company known for creating durable concrete skateparks. Construction began in May 2014, and the project was completed by the summer of the same year. The park’s design includes features like a large bowl and street-style elements, making it accessible to skaters of all skill levels. The skatepark was built on land owned and managed by Teignbridge District Council.
Ashburton Skatepark replaced an older wooden structure that had deteriorated over time, and the new facility, built with concrete, promises greater longevity and safety. The Ashburton Rollers continue to play an active role in maintaining the skatepark, organizing occasional events such as skate jams and community clean-ups.
The funding and development of Ashburton Skatepark demonstrate the power of community-driven initiatives. By pooling resources and advocating for local needs, the Ashburton Rollers ensured that the youth of Ashburton and surrounding areas have a high-quality, long-lasting recreational space for years to come.
