ABOUT SKATEPARK

Esplanade skate plaza

The Cairns Esplanade Skate Plaza, located on the foreshore of Cairns, Queensland, was designed and constructed by Convic and officially opened in 2007. At the time of its opening, it was the largest skate facility in Australia, covering approximately 2,300 square meters. The skatepark features a combination of bowls and street-style elements, catering to both casual skaters and professionals. Key features include large bowls, ledges, and other street obstacles that provide a well-rounded skating experience.

The development of the skate plaza was part of a broader redevelopment of the Cairns Esplanade, aimed at revitalizing the area and promoting it as a hub for both locals and tourists. The project was funded and supported by the Cairns Regional Council, with the skate plaza becoming a central feature of this urban leisure space. It has received recognition, including the 2008 National Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Design Award, for its innovative design that blends seamlessly with the surrounding foreshore.
