ABOUT SKATEPARK

Godmanchester Skatepark

Godmanchester Skatepark, located at Judith's Field, was completed in August 2019. It replaced an aging facility that no longer met the needs of the community. The skatepark was designed and constructed by Maverick Skateparks, a well-regarded firm in the industry, following a competitive tender process. Maverick was selected for their ability to deliver a robust and inclusive design that would appeal to a wide range of users, from beginners to experienced skaters. The project was completed swiftly to allow the park to open in time for the school holidays, making it an immediate success with local youth.

The funding for the skatepark came from multiple sources. Godmanchester Town Council played a central role in securing the necessary finances, which totaled £168,000. A significant portion of the funding was provided by WREN, a UK-based organization that distributes landfill tax credits to community and environmental projects. Additional support came from Sports England, an agency dedicated to fostering active lifestyles, and Amey, a major infrastructure services company. Together, these contributors helped realize the dream of a modern skatepark for the town.

The skatepark is a concrete structure, which ensures its durability and low maintenance compared to older metal ramp designs. It has been highly praised for its smooth transitions and thoughtful layout, making it enjoyable for a variety of users including skateboarders, BMX riders, and scooter enthusiasts. The design accommodates different skill levels, ensuring both novices and seasoned skaters can find features suited to their abilities.

Before the current skatepark, Godmanchester had a much simpler skate facility with metal ramps, which had been showing signs of wear and no longer met modern standards. The replacement park marked a significant upgrade for the town’s youth, providing a safe and engaging space for physical activity.

In addition to the skatepark, the town added a pump track in 2021, further enhancing the recreational offerings at Judith’s Field. The pump track was built by Clark & Kent Contractors and aimed at BMX riders, mountain bikers, and scooters, complementing the skatepark and creating a larger area for outdoor sports enthusiasts. The proximity of both facilities creates a versatile community space, promoting healthy lifestyles and social interaction.
