The Bailey Park Skatepark in Grinnell, Iowa, underwent a major renovation that was completed in 2018. Originally, the skatepark featured wooden ramps, which had deteriorated over time due to minimal upkeep. To revitalize the park, the community banded together through various fundraising efforts, supported by the local organization Imagine Grinnell, the city, and Grinnell College.
SpohnRanch, a well-known skatepark design and construction firm, was brought on to design and build the new concrete skatepark, which is now larger and more versatile, accommodating both BMX riders and skateboarders. The design includes features like a street plaza and transition sections that appeal to skaters of various skill levels. The city of Grinnell played a key role in facilitating the project, although it did not have the financial resources to fund the park on its own, relying instead on fundraising and community support.
The skatepark has quickly become a popular space for local youth, who use it to practice and improve their skating skills in a safe, dedicated environment. The new park is considered a significant upgrade from the previous facility, offering durable concrete features and a variety of skateable elements.
