Hayling Island Skatepark, located on the seafront of Hayling Island, Hampshire, was officially opened in November 2021. The project was designed and constructed by Maverick Skateparks, a well-known company specializing in concrete skatepark builds. The new skatepark replaced an older, deteriorating facility, which had been constructed in 1997 using steel and wood. Over time, this older structure became unsafe due to corrosion and lack of maintenance, prompting a community-led campaign to rebuild it.
The redevelopment was driven by a local initiative called The Hayling Skatepark Project, which worked closely with Havant Borough Council and other stakeholders to raise the necessary funds. Over £215,000 was collected through donations, fundraising events, and various grant schemes, ensuring the vision of a modern, durable concrete park could be realized. The design includes a mix of street and bowl features, making it suitable for skaters, BMX riders, and scooter users of all skill levels. Key features of the park include technical curbs, a unique Pier 7 area, and various gaps that allow for creative trick combinations.
The new facility not only addresses the safety concerns of the old park but also offers a quieter and more enjoyable experience for riders, thanks to its concrete construction. It has quickly become a hub for local skaters and visitors, and there are plans for further development in the future to enhance the park even more.
The success of this project highlights the importance of community engagement in securing funds and shaping the design of public recreational spaces.
