KAP 686 Skateplaza, located in Cologne, Germany, was built in 2011 and designed by Metrobox Architekten. This unique skatepark was developed in response to the growing tension between local skaters and the city due to issues with skateboarding around Cologne Cathedral. To resolve this, the skaters formed an association, and the city worked closely with them to create a dedicated space. The resulting plaza, located at Rheinauhafen near the Rhine River, provides a skate-friendly public space that harmonizes with the urban landscape.
The skatepark's design moves away from traditional skatepark features like ramps and curves, focusing instead on recreating urban elements such as steps, edges, and ledges that skaters would find in city environments. The space also includes green areas, integrating seamlessly into the surrounding public square. This innovative design has made KAP 686 a significant part of Cologne’s urban culture, attracting both skaters and spectators alike.
Funded by the City of Cologne, the project cost approximately €500,000 and covers an area of 2,000 square meters. Built on a flood plain near the river, the park had to meet specific design challenges, such as ensuring that the surface remained smooth for skating while still allowing for proper drainage in case of flooding. Since its opening, the plaza has been a successful integration of sports and public space, drawing both locals and visitors.
This collaboration between skaters, architects, and the city government has transformed KAP 686 into an iconic skateboarding destination, revitalizing a previously lifeless section of Cologne's waterfront.
