The Katif Skatepark, located at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Bridgetown, Barbados, is a significant addition to the region's sports infrastructure, marking a step forward for skateboarding in the Caribbean. This skatepark, a project realized by the Maria Holder Memorial Trust, was completed with an investment of around BDS $1.4 million (USD $700,000). The facility provides a dedicated, high-quality space for Barbadian skateboarders to develop their skills, potentially opening paths to future Olympic representation.
Designed by Pillar Design Studios and constructed with a focus on durability, Katif Skatepark features a mix of street and bowl elements that cater to both beginners and seasoned skaters. It includes typical skatepark features like quarter pipes, ledges, rails, and a mini-ramp, allowing for diverse skating styles. The park's lighting and concrete surface ensure it remains accessible and safe for skaters at all times.
In addition to advancing skateboarding as a sport in Barbados, the skatepark aims to serve as a community hub, encouraging physical activity and providing a safe environment for youth. The National Sports Council manages the park, ensuring that it remains a valuable resource for Barbados' skateboarding community. The government and the Maria Holder Memorial Trust hope this facility will foster future talent and make Barbados a destination for international skateboarding events, enhancing both local development and tourism.
