Kona Skatepark, located in Jacksonville, Florida, is celebrated as one of the world's oldest operating skateparks. Established on June 4, 1977, by Martin and Helen Ramos, the park has played a pivotal role in shaping the skateboarding landscape.
In its early days, Kona faced significant financial challenges, experiencing bankruptcy twice within the first year. The park remained closed for nearly a year until the Ramos family, with community support, reopened it on June 27, 1979, dedicating it to "The Youth of Jacksonville."
Kona's original design featured elements like a pro bowl with a six-foot vert tombstone, a snake run, the J-run, and a freestyle area. Over the years, the park has expanded to include modern amenities while preserving its classic structures. Notably, Kona is recognized for the invention of the modern "vert" ramp, significantly influencing skateboarding's evolution.
Despite economic downturns and industry fluctuations, Kona has endured, earning the title of the "longest surviving privately owned skatepark" globally, as acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Beyond its physical features, Kona has been integral to the skateboarding community, hosting numerous events and nurturing talent. Its cultural significance is highlighted by its inclusion as a level in the video game "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4."
