ABOUT SKATEPARK

Lippepark Skatepark

Lippepark Skatepark in Hamm, Germany, is part of the larger Lippepark, which was established on a former mining site. The location was previously occupied by the “Schacht Franz” coal mine, which operated between 1923 and 1994. The mine was decommissioned and sealed in 2002, with the remnants demolished shortly after. It remained inaccessible until 2009 when planning began under the initiative “Im Westen was Neues” (Something New in the West). This marked the start of a significant redevelopment effort aimed at converting the area into a recreational space.

The transformation was a community-driven project, emphasizing public input. Local residents, including former miners, teenagers, and immigrant groups, contributed to shaping the park's final design. The concept involved creating a central recreational hub that linked three local districts—Pelkum, Bockum-Hövel, and Herringen. A key element of the park’s design was the inclusion of sports facilities such as the skatepark, which was co-designed by local youth. This space also features BMX tracks and parkour zones, fostering an active sports culture within the community.

The construction of Lippepark, including the skatepark, was funded with a budget of approximately €17 million. A significant portion, around 20%, was covered by the city of Hamm, while additional financing came from regional, federal, and European Union funds. The funding supported not only the structural elements but also facilitated extensive citizen participation throughout the planning stages. This engagement was recognized in 2018 when the park received the Engaged Cities Award in New York for its innovative approach to civic involvement.

The skatepark, built by X-move, itself has become a central attraction in the park, offering diverse features for different skill levels. Alongside the skate facilities, Lippepark now hosts bike trails, green spaces, an outdoor museum celebrating the mining history, and spaces designed for social interactions. This successful conversion from an industrial to a recreational site highlights the positive impact of inclusive urban planning.
