The Norton Skatepark, located within Norton Community Park in Burlington, Ontario, is a 13,000-square-foot concrete facility that represents a significant advancement in the city's recreational landscape. This project was designed and built by New Line Skateparks in 2013. The park was developed to serve as a flagship destination for North Burlington, providing a high-performance environment that caters to the diverse needs of skateboarders, BMX riders, and scooter enthusiasts while fitting into the modern aesthetic of the surrounding community.
The design is a comprehensive "flow-plaza" hybrid, characterized by its wide-open layout and multi-level tiers. The park is anchored by a sophisticated flow bowl section with varied depths and extensions, which provides ample speed for transition-oriented riders. This section transitions seamlessly into an expansive street plaza that features a variety of urban obstacles, including granite-capped hubba ledges, flat rails, a central "A-frame" pyramid, and diverse stair sets. The layout is engineered for "circular flow," allowing multiple riders to navigate unique lines across the facility without crossing paths, which is essential for a high-traffic regional hub.
Constructed with high-strength, smooth-troweled concrete, the facility was built to endure the rigorous freeze-thaw cycles of Southern Ontario while maintaining a fast and quiet riding surface. The design prioritizes "place-making" by integrating the skatepark into the broader Norton Community Park, which includes advanced amenities such as artificial turf fields and a splash pad. The site features ample spectator seating, clear sightlines for safety, and landscaped "green breaks" that help the concrete structure blend naturally into the park’s environment. Today, Norton Skatepark is celebrated as one of the premier facilities in the Halton Region, known for its technical versatility and inclusive design.
