ABOUT SKATEPARK

Playground 52 skatepark

Playground 52, located in the South Bronx, has been a vital community space since its original establishment. The park underwent a major transformation between 2016 and 2018 as part of the New York City Community Parks Initiative (CPI), which aims to enhance under-resourced parks. This $9.5 million renovation included the construction of a new skatepark, updated basketball courts, a larger, ADA-accessible amphitheater, and various other modern amenities. These upgrades were designed to reflect the needs of the local community, which frequently uses the space for events such as concerts and salsa dancing.

The renovation was completed in phases, with significant funding contributions from various city entities. The first phase, which focused on rebuilding the amphitheater and adding the skatepark, was supported by $1.7 million from the City Council, $1 million from the office of former Bronx Borough President Rubén Diaz Jr., and $311,000 from the mayor's office. The second phase, which introduced new play equipment and fitness structures, received an additional $5.3 million from the mayor. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) also contributed $774,000 to install green infrastructure to manage stormwater and improve air quality, which highlights the project's environmental sustainability efforts.

The new skatepark, built by SpohnRanch skatepark, which was a key element of the renovation, provides a modern recreational facility for skaters in the neighborhood, adding another layer of community engagement to Playground 52. This park is a testament to years of advocacy by "52 People for Progress," a local group led by Al Quiñones, who worked tirelessly to improve and maintain the playground for future generations. The park was later renamed Al Quiñones Playground in 2024, in honor of his contributions to the community. This revitalized space now stands as a symbol of community empowerment and cultural pride in the South Bronx.
