Projekts MCR Skatepark, located beneath the Mancunian Way in Manchester, opened in 2012 and has become one of the UK's largest community-led skateparks. Originally built in response to a citywide ban on skateboarding in public spaces, it aimed to provide a dedicated and safe area for skateboarders and other small-wheeled sports enthusiasts.
The skatepark features both concrete and wooden elements, including flat banks, stair sets, rails, ledges, and bowled corners. The park has been expanded over time, with major funding support from the National Lottery, Sport England, and Veolia Environmental Trust. A successful crowdfunding campaign raised over £134,000 for further expansion, which included adding ramps and improving community spaces, such as the café and spectator areas.
Projekts MCR serves a wide range of users, including children from local schools, people with autism, the LGBTQ+ community, and residents of nearby council estates. Its mission goes beyond skateboarding, focusing on community development and inclusivity through sport and physical activity.
