ABOUT SKATEPARK

Queensborough skatepark

The Queensborough Skatepark, located at 920 Ewen Avenue within the Queensborough Community Centre grounds in New Westminster, BC, is a unique 12,500-square-foot facility that stands out for its "organic" and unconventional design. This project was designed and built by New Line Skateparks in 2011, serving as a creative "all-wheel" environment for skateboarders and BMX riders. The park’s architecture was inspired by industrial drainage ditches, a nod to the raw, urban spots that historically fueled the growth of action sports.

The design is centered around a "ditch-style" flow, featuring a series of banked walls and rolling concrete channels that facilitate effortless speed and long, continuous lines. Unlike a traditional plaza with rigid corners, Queensborough emphasizes transition and curvature, incorporating quarter pipes, hips, and extensions that wrap around the park's perimeter. These features are complemented by sculptural concrete elements and "pocket" bowls that allow for creative carving and technical airs. The layout is intentionally open and rhythmic, encouraging riders to explore non-traditional lines through the ditch-inspired terrain.

Adjacent to the concrete park lies an expansive BMX dirt-jump track, which was developed with input from professional BMX legend Jay Miron. This addition makes the facility a comprehensive destination for dirt and street riders alike, offering beginner, intermediate, and expert lines. To enhance the user experience, the city integrated a prominent entry plaza with shade structures and custom shotcrete boulder seats for spectators.

Constructed with high-quality concrete and designed to handle the heavy rainfall of the Pacific Northwest, the park also features a bike wash station and is conveniently located near the community centre’s washroom facilities. Its position on the eastern tip of Lulu Island provides a quiet, dedicated space for the local riding community to hone their skills. Today, the Queensborough Skatepark is celebrated for its innovative "ditch" concept and its role in providing a diverse, high-energy recreational space for the New Westminster region.
