Royal Oak Skatepark, also known as Meanwhile 2, is a legendary skate spot located under the Westway overpass on Harrow Road in London (postcode W2 5XQ). Established decades ago, it has become an integral part of the local skateboarding scene and is free to use.
The park is best known for its two concrete half pipes, which are positioned in a row with a notable gap between them. This gap gained international recognition when skateboarding icon Mark Gonzales performed a frontside ollie over it in 1987. In August 2008, the skatepark underwent renovations, adding a new section next to the original half pipes. This extension introduced a flat bank, a T-block ledge, a pyramid hip, and a bowl corner, offering skaters a variety of features to ride.
A unique aspect of Royal Oak Skatepark is its location under the Westway overpass, providing cover from rain and making it one of the few sheltered skateparks in London. This has helped it remain a popular year-round spot for skateboarders. The skatepark is also easily accessible, just a short walk from the Royal Oak Underground station, which serves the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. For those looking to skate a place rich in history while enjoying a mix of classic and modern obstacles, Royal Oak Skatepark remains one of London's most iconic skateboarding destinations.
Royal Oak Skatepark was constructed in 1978. It was established as an extension to the original Meanwhile Gardens skatepark, which was built in 1976. The new ramps were later relocated to a site beneath the Westway overpass at Royal Oak, where they remain today.
