Scarborough Skatepark, commonly known as Hairy Bob's Skatepark, is located in Royal Albert Park near Scarborough's South Bay, right next to the iconic Hairy Bob's Cave and below the castle headland. This scenic seaside skatepark was designed and built by Maverick Industries and opened in 2009. The park is a product of a strong collaboration between Maverick, Scarborough Borough Council, and the local Skate4Scarborough community group.
The design of the skatepark incorporates both street and transition elements, including a large bowl and open plaza areas, offering something for skaters of all skill levels, including BMX riders and scooter users. One of the park's unique features is the concrete wave and lighthouse structures, which pay homage to Scarborough's coastal heritage while providing challenging obstacles for riders. These creative features have made the park a beloved spot in the region, attracting both local skaters and visitors.
Funding for the park came through a mix of local council support and community fundraising initiatives, driven by a shared desire to create a world-class facility. Over the years, Hairy Bob's has become a well-used and well-loved skatepark, playing a significant role in supporting the local youth and action sports scene.
Scarborough Skatepark continues to thrive over a decade after its construction, with regular visitors and events. It remains a testament to the power of community involvement and thoughtful design.
