Central Fwy, San Francisco, California 94103, United States of America.
Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of SoMa (South of Market) in San Francisco lies a hidden gem cherished by skateboarders: the SoMa West Skatepark. This iconic spot, located under a bridge overpass, isn't just a place to ride, but a symbol of the city's rich skateboarding culture and the resilience of its community. The story of SoMa West Skatepark dates back to the early 2000s when a group of passionate skateboarders, in collaboration with local officials and activists, envisioned a space dedicated to their beloved sport. At that time, San Francisco lacked proper facilities for skateboarders, leading many to practice on streets and sidewalks, often facing issues with law enforcement and safety concerns. The initiative gained momentum through grassroots efforts and advocacy. Community leaders recognized the need for a designated area where skateboarders could hone their skills safely, away from busy streets. With unwavering determination and support from various stakeholders, the idea of SoMa West Skatepark began to take shape and it officially opened in 2014. Over the years, the skatepark has undergone several upgrades and expansions, thanks to ongoing community involvement and partnerships with local businesses and organizations.
The SkateparkProject helped fund this skatepark in 2011.
