South Whittier Skatepark, located in Amelia Mayberry Park in Whittier, California, officially opened in February 2020. The skatepark was designed and built by California Skateparks, covering 18,500 square feet. This concrete skatepark includes a variety of features such as ledges, bowls, quarter pipes, rails, a volcano, and more, making it accessible to skaters of all skill levels.
The park was developed with input from local skaters who participated in workshops to help design the layout, ensuring that it met the needs of the community. The project was primarily funded by $2 million in Measure A funds allocated by Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn. The funding and design collaboration between the skaters and the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust resulted in a community-driven project that addresses the lack of safe skating spaces in the area.
Before the park's construction, local skaters resorted to practicing in the parking lot of the senior center and on nearby sidewalks. The new skatepark now provides a safe, legal space for skating and reflects the community's input, making it a source of pride for local skaters. This project is a testament to how community involvement can lead to the development of public recreational facilities that benefit everyone.
