Sykesville, Maryland, is home to the South Branch Skatepark, a 13,000-square-foot concrete skatepark that opened in 2016. The park was designed and built by Spohn Ranch, a renowned skatepark construction company. The project was initiated after local skateboarders transformed a flat concrete slab at South Branch Park into a DIY skatepark, catching the attention of county and town officials. Recognizing the value of a professionally built facility, Howard County took action, hiring SpohnRanch to create a state-of-the-art park that replaced the makeshift setup known as "Shrimptown."
The park features a variety of elements catering to skaters of all levels, including a bowl with varying elevations (from 4 to 7 feet), a mini-ramp, stairs, rails, and some creative flow elements requested by local skaters. One standout feature is a volcano manny pad, specifically included as a community-requested element. The design process involved extensive community input through workshops, ensuring the park met the needs and desires of the local skateboarding community.
A significant part of the project was addressing drainage issues at the site. The old slab suffered from standing water, so channels were cut into the concrete to connect to a drainage system that prevents pooling. The park also pays tribute to the area's history, as the site was once home to an apple butter factory. To honor this, an ornamental steel apple was installed at the park's entrance.
