Quebec Street & Union Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
The Vancouver Skate Plaza, located beneath the Georgia Street Viaduct, is a pioneering urban intervention that transformed a derelict industrial "no-man's land" into what is widely considered the world’s first true street-style skate plaza. Originally built in 2004 as a temporary facility for the Vancouver Parks Board, the project was designed and built by New Line Skateparks in close partnership with the Vancouver Skate Coalition, the Vancouver Police Service, and local stakeholders. This landmark project shifted the global paradigm of skatepark design away from traditional "parks" and toward "skateable urban landscapes," a success recognized in 2005 with a Regional Honour Award from the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects.
The design is a masterclass in "urban form," intentionally mimicking the authentic street architecture that skaters naturally gravitate toward. By utilizing creative value engineering and the existing industrial infrastructure of the viaduct, the team developed a layout featuring granite ledges, realistic stairs, manual pads, and banks that look and feel like a natural part of the city fabric. Beyond the terrain, the project prioritized Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, turning a formerly avoided underpass into a safe, high-activity community asset. The Vancouver Skate Plaza has since become a global case study for urban renewal, proving that underutilized city spaces can be reclaimed to provide inclusive, world-class recreation for youth while fostering a vibrant, safe street culture.
