Washington Terrace Park Skatepark, located in Niles, Illinois, is an 8,000-square-foot concrete skatepark. It was officially opened in October 2014 after several years of advocacy by local skaters. The project began when a group of high school students in Niles created a Facebook petition, urging local authorities to establish a public skatepark. The initial plan was to set up a few metal ramps on an old asphalt slab previously used for roller hockey and tennis. However, due to support from the local community and professional input, the plan evolved into a fully concrete skatepark.
The park was designed and constructed by SpohnRanch, a leading company in skatepark design. They utilized the existing asphalt as a base, covering it with a five-inch reinforced concrete layer to create a smooth skating surface. The park includes a variety of street-style features, such as quarter pipes, ledges, handrails, and a manual pad. These features make it a versatile space for skaters, BMX riders, inline skaters, and scooter users.
Funding for Washington Terrace Park Skatepark was primarily from the Village of Niles. The decision to invest in a concrete park, rather than temporary metal ramps, was influenced by strong local support and the desire for a durable, high-quality facility. Since its opening, the skatepark has become a popular spot for the local skating community, drawing skaters of all ages and skill levels from the wider Chicago area.
The park is open daily from dawn until dusk and does not require any entry fee, making it accessible to everyone. Despite initial concerns about the park only serving a niche group, it has become a vibrant hub for both skaters and BMX riders, highlighting its role in enhancing community engagement and outdoor activity in Niles.
