In 2023, the municipality of Bunschoten-Spakenburg unveiled a dynamic skatepark designed in collaboration with the local community. This modern facility caters to various disciplines, offering a spacious layout that accommodates numerous skaters, even during peak times.
The initiative to renovate the outdated skatepark gained momentum in April 2021 when a group of local youths presented a petition, signed by over 1,000 individuals, to the mayor and council members. They highlighted the existing park's lack of challenges and space, leading to safety concerns and prompting skaters to seek alternative locations, such as central squares and parking garages. Recognizing the community's needs, the municipality allocated approximately €200,000 from national COVID-19 support funds to modernize and expand the skatepark near 't Kruisrak.
The design and construction were executed by Nine Yards Skateparks, who worked closely with local skaters and the municipality to ensure the facility met user expectations. The central location is easily accessible via public transportation. A distinctive feature of the park is the pigmented concrete flooring, which provides a serene appearance and contrasts effectively with the obstacles, enhancing skater orientation.
