Ciutadella skatepark is a concrete street focused park, designed by Skate-architects. The proposal for the municipality of Barcelona for this project was clear from the start: To abandon the preconceived idea of “skatepark,” and to simply look, recognize and value the reality of the kind of street skateboarding and architecture that has already made Barcelona world famous. Street skateboarding doesn’t really have to be an urban problem. Rather than a skateplaza, we preferred just to propose a new skatespot, designed this time specifically for skateboarding, but using the same kind of public space architecture and materials (black granit) that we already have in the city, with obvious multiple references to many of our beloved skatespots. We believe it’s time to put on the institutional spotlight, in a positive manner, the reality of Street Skateboarding in the city and to celebrate what Barcelona and its architecture means for skateboarding internationally, for so many years now. This plaza has also an architectural function as a new proper “base” for the Sports Hall building, following exactly its plangrid to establish the pavement and obstacle measurements. Basically, this project is mostly about dignifying Street skateboarding and the space we use. It’s also about giving back, helping building the city with skatebording, as a positive urban ressource.
