The Gary New Duluth (GND) Skatepark, located in the Gary-New Duluth neighborhood of Duluth, Minnesota, is a state-of-the-art facility that has become a central hub for skateboarding enthusiasts in the region. Its development reflects a decade-long commitment to enhancing community recreational spaces.
The skatepark was designed by nationally recognized skatepark designer Mark Leski, also known as "The Wizard." Leski's vision incorporated an urban, streetscape design, making the facility unique within the city. The construction was undertaken by Grindline Skateparks, Inc., a company renowned for building high-quality skateparks. Construction began in May 2024 and was completed by September 2024.
The development of the GND Skatepark was a collaborative effort involving various funding sources. The City of Duluth allocated funds from the St. Louis River Corridor Initiative and the Athletic Venues Reinvestment Initiative. Additionally, the GND Development Alliance (GNDDA) contributed to the project. Community fundraising played a significant role, with a successful matching grant challenge raising over $28,000.
The skatepark spans approximately 12,000 square feet and features a variety of elements catering to different skill levels. These include ramps, rails, ledges, and a transition section, providing skaters with diverse opportunities to practice and showcase their skills. The facility is part of the larger GND Recreation Area, which also includes soccer fields, an open-air pavilion, a dog park, and a community garden.
