The RELM Skatepark, officially known as the Randy & Erik Lawry Memorial Skatepark, is a prominent concrete skate facility located at 10402 Greenwood Lane in Hayward, Wisconsin. This park stands as a testament to community collaboration and dedication to providing a safe space for skateboarding enthusiasts.
In the early 1990s, Hayward's skateboarding community faced challenges due to limited designated areas for skating. In 1994, Erik Lawry, an avid local skateboarder, proposed the creation of a skatepark to the Hayward City Council as part of a school project. Tragically, Erik passed away in a dirt bike accident in June 1995. In his memory, family, friends, and community members rallied to realize his vision.
The skatepark's design was spearheaded by Adam Hall, Erik's best friend, who dedicated significant time to creating a facility that would honor Erik's passion for skateboarding. Construction was undertaken by Jerry Lester Construction, with substantial volunteer support from the community. The park was completed in the summer of 1998, featuring an all-concrete layout suitable for skateboarders, BMX bikers, and rollerbladers.
Funding for the skatepark was achieved through various community-driven initiatives, including snow tubing and snowboarding events, snowmobile speed runs, and airplane rides. By 1998, approximately half of the necessary funds had been raised. To ensure the project's completion, Erik's father, Randy Lawry, generously donated the remaining amount. Following Randy's unexpected passing in June 2001, the park was renamed the Randy & Erik Lawry Memorial (RELM) Skatepark to honor both father and son.
