The Michael Komenda Memorial Skatepark, located within the Laishley Park waterfront area in Punta Gorda, Florida, is a 15,000-square-foot facility that stands as a premier destination for the Gulf Coast action sports community. This project was designed by New Line Skateparks and built by SPA Skateparks in 2009. The park was dedicated to the memory of Michael Komenda, a local skater, and serves as a world-class replacement for an older facility destroyed by Hurricane Charley, representing a significant investment in the city's youth and recreational infrastructure.
The design is a expansive "hybrid" landscape that balances high-intensity transition with technical street terrain. The centerpiece is a massive, multi-depth flow bowl featuring various extensions, hips, and a "cradle-like" wall that allows for advanced aerial maneuvers and high-speed carving. This transition zone is seamlessly linked to a sprawling street plaza that features granite-capped hubba ledges, diverse stair sets, flat rails, and unique "up-ledges." The layout is engineered to facilitate "infinite flow," utilizing perimeter quarter pipes to return riders into the street section without a loss of momentum.
As the construction partner, SPA Skateparks utilized their specialized expertise in precision concrete to ensure the park could handle the intense Florida sun and tropical humidity. The construction features high-quality, smooth-troweled concrete and heavy-duty steel edging on all grinding surfaces. The facility is strategically located along the Peace River, providing stunning waterfront views and benefiting from cool river breezes. It is equipped with professional-grade lighting for evening sessions and integrated spectator seating. Today, the Michael Komenda Memorial Skatepark is recognized as one of the top facilities in Florida, praised for its massive scale, creative lines, and its role as a vibrant social hub for the Punta Gorda community.
