Catoctin Skatepark, located in Leesburg, Virginia, is a 12,000-square-foot facility that caters to inline skaters, skateboarders, and BMX riders. It originally opened in 1998 but underwent a major renovation, reopening in May 2017 as the Eric Brown Skate Plaza at Catoctin Park. This renovation was necessary as the original park had aged and required significant updates to meet modern standards for skateparks.
The park's design and construction were a collaborative effort between the Town of Leesburg's Parks and Recreation Department and local skateboarders, ensuring the skatepark addressed the needs of the community. It features a smooth asphalt surface coated for enhanced performance, as well as various obstacles, including launch ramps, fun boxes, rail slides, and half-pipes. These features provide challenges for skaters of different skill levels, ensuring that both beginners and more advanced riders can enjoy the park.
The funding for Catoctin Skatepark's renovation came from a combination of public and private sources. Local fundraising efforts, including events like raffles and "Battle of the Bands," played a crucial role in financing the project. This community-driven approach not only helped secure the necessary funds but also fostered a sense of local ownership and pride in the park.
In recent years, additional improvements have been made, such as the installation of lighting in 2022, allowing for extended use of the park after dark. This feature has been highly requested by park users, making the facility more accessible throughout the year. Photos courtesy of SpohnRanch skateparks
