The Lynch Family Skatepark, located in East Cambridge, Massachusetts, opened in November 2015 after more than a decade of planning and fundraising. It spans 40,000 square feet under the Zakim Bridge and is one of the largest skateparks in the region. The project was spearheaded by the Charles River Conservancy, with design input from the local skateboarding community and professional skaters. The skatepark caters to all skill levels, from beginners to professional athletes, and supports multiple sports including skateboarding, BMX, and inline skating.
Construction of the skatepark was made possible through significant financial contributions. Vans provided a leadership donation of $1.5 million and has committed to maintaining the park with an annual $25,000 contribution for seven years. The Lynch Foundation also played a critical role, contributing $800,000, and additional funds came from grants, local government, and private donors. In total, the project cost approximately $5 million, which included environmental remediation as the site was a former brownfield.
Designed by Stantec, the park blends the industrial aesthetics of its urban location with elements that reflect Boston’s skate culture, incorporating local materials and nods to the city’s sports teams. Its unique location along the Charles River and proximity to North Point Park makes it a central recreational hub.
The Lynch Family Skatepark is not just a recreational facility; it also serves as a venue for professional events, with Vans planning to host large competitions annually. It continues to foster community engagement through public art projects and skate jams, ensuring that it remains a vital space for skaters and the wider Boston community.
