Sandwich Skatepark, also known as Milestone Park Skatepark, is located in Sandwich, Illinois, and spans 8,000 square feet. This skatepark was designed and constructed by SpohnRanch, a company renowned for building high-quality skateparks across the United States. The park officially opened in 2012 and has since become a popular destination for skaters in Sandwich and surrounding communities.
The skatepark's design features a mix of street and transition elements, including rails, stairs, hubbas, ledges, a quarterpipe, and a unique miniramp. This combination of obstacles makes it suitable for skaters of all levels, from beginners to more advanced riders. The layout allows for fluid movement throughout the park, encouraging skaters to link tricks seamlessly across multiple features.
Funding for the park came in part from a matching grant provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which played a crucial role in its development. This grant was part of a broader investment in the Sandwich Park District, which includes other facilities like playgrounds and a splash pad. The total cost for the skatepark and adjacent recreational features reached approximately $1.5 million, demonstrating the community's commitment to creating diverse recreational opportunities.
The skatepark is part of the larger Milestone Park, a multi-use recreational area that offers a variety of amenities, including softball diamonds and walking trails. Milestone Park itself has a history dating back to the 1970s, and the skatepark is one of its newer and most popular attractions. The park is free to the public and operates from dawn to dusk, making it a convenient spot for local and visiting skaters alike.
