Sheldon Skatepark, also known as the Southeast Valley Skatepark, is a 25,000-square-foot skate facility located in Sun Valley, California. The skatepark was built by California Skateparks and opened to the public on June 9, 2014. Designed to cater to skaters of all skill levels, it features a wide range of obstacles, including ledges, rails, stair sets, banks, and ramps. The park is primarily street-style, with a variety of elements that allow skaters to practice and perform technical tricks. The park also incorporates shaded areas, ADA-compliant restrooms, and native landscaping, providing a well-rounded recreational space for the community.
The project cost around $4 million, which included both land acquisition and construction costs. Half of the funding came from Proposition 40, a state grant dedicated to creating public parks and recreational spaces. The land for the park was originally intended for a condominium development, but the community pushed for the space to be used for public recreation instead. This decision turned the property into one of the largest skateparks in the Los Angeles area.
The park has been a significant addition to the local skate scene, drawing skaters from around the San Fernando Valley. It also provides a safe and legal place for skateboarders to practice, helping to reduce skating in non-designated urban areas.
