5151 N Colony Boulevard, The Colony, Texas 75056, United States of America
The City of The Colony’s Wheel Zone – Skate & Bike Park celebrated its official grand opening on December 16, 2017, unveiling a fully renovated and expanded facility that represents a major upgrade for the community. Originally built in 2003, the skatepark previously featured prefabricated metal ramps on a concrete slab, enclosed by a chain-link fence. As part of a design-build project with the City, the outdated elements were removed, the fence came down, and the skatepark was transformed into a custom-designed, poured-in-place concrete facility—doubling its original size.
This “slab retrofit” project was a much-needed improvement, aligning with the growing preference among skaters, bikers, and scooter riders for permanently built concrete parks over metal, prefabricated structures. Municipalities like The Colony continue to recognize the long-term value and enhanced user experience that modern concrete skateparks bring to their communities.
Designed in collaboration with New Line Skateparks and shaped by extensive input from local users, the updated park responds directly to requests for lower-level, technical plaza terrain. Much of the new layout was constructed over the existing post-tensioned slab, incorporating manual pads, ledges, and rails to create an authentic street skating feel. The expansion also introduced quarter pipes for transitional skating and incorporated elevation changes to allow for features like a big bank, London Gap, and stair set.
A defining feature of the park is the integration of The Colony’s ship logo, custom-fabricated by the SPA Skateparks team and embedded into the main manual pad—giving the park a distinct and lasting connection to the city it serves.
