WLCAC Skatepark, located in Watts, California, is a community-focused 4,000-square-foot concrete skatepark. The park was designed and built by SpohnRanch in collaboration with the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) and was completed in 2010. This project aimed to provide local youth with a safe and positive space for skateboarding and other action sports, serving as an alternative to the challenges of crime and gang activity in the area.
The skatepark features a mix of street and transition elements, including quarter pipes, hubbas, handrails, ledges, banks, and a London Gap. These features cater to skaters of different skill levels, from beginners to more advanced riders. The park's design incorporates a historical mural, adding a cultural element to the recreational space, and reflects the community's efforts to revitalize the neighborhood through positive initiatives.
Funding for the park was supported by community involvement and backing from organizations like The Skatepark Project, emphasizing the importance of accessible recreational areas in underserved communities. The site, previously an under-utilized loading zone, was transformed into a vibrant skatepark to promote healthy lifestyles and community engagement.
WLCAC Skatepark continues to be a crucial part of Watts, representing both a physical and symbolic achievement in community development, providing an inclusive environment for local youth and promoting skate culture in the area.
