ABOUT SKATEPARK

The Turf skatepark

One of the most legendary skateparks in American history, The Turf originally opened in 1979 as Surfin’ Turf in Greenfield, just outside Milwaukee. Designed by Art Kent, the park became famous for its fast, sculpted concrete bowls and indoor/outdoor setup — a rarity at the time. It drew pro skaters from all over, including Tony Hawk and Steve Alva. After closing in 1982, briefly reopening in 1987, and shutting down for good in 1996, the park was buried and forgotten — until a group of skaters rediscovered one of its bowls during highway construction in 2010. That single night of skating sparked a movement to bring it back. Fast forward to 2025: after years of advocacy, fundraising, and community grit, The Turf has officially been reborn. Designed and built by Grindline Skateparks, the new Turf stays true to the original bowls while adding a fresh street section. It’s now a free, public park, located at 4267 W. Loomis Rd. Whether you're a skate history nerd or just want to ride one of the gnarliest concrete parks in the Midwest — The Turf is a must-visit.
