The Albany Snake Run Skateboard Park, located in Albany, Western Australia, holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving skatepark in Australia and the second oldest in the world.
In the mid-1970s, following a tragic skateboarder fatality on Albany's main street, a group of students from Albany Senior High School initiated efforts to establish a dedicated skatepark. Their fundraising efforts garnered $3,000, complemented by a $10,000 contribution and a 3-acre land donation from the Albany Town Council. The park was constructed on a former gravel quarry site and officially opened in February 1976 by American skateboarder Russ Howell. The Snake Run is a 140-meter-long reinforced concrete downhill track.
This design is rare internationally, representing an early adoption of the downhill slalom style in skatepark construction. The Albany Snake Run is believed to be the world's first community-built skatepark. Its innovative design has influenced skatepark constructions globally, particularly in the United States.
In recognition of its cultural and historical importance, the park was added to Western Australia's heritage register in 2016, becoming one of only three skateparks worldwide to receive heritage listing. As of 2025, the Albany Snake Run continues to be a cherished landmark within the skateboarding community, attracting skaters from around the world who seek to experience its historic and challenging course.
