Planz Park Skatepark, located in Bakersfield, California, is a 7,000-square-foot concrete skatepark that officially opened in 2014. The park was designed and built by SpohnRanch, a well-known skatepark design firm, and features a blend of street and transition elements. This modern facility was one of Bakersfield's earliest significant skateparks, providing the local skating community with much-needed amenities for both beginner and intermediate skaters.
The skatepark is divided into different sections: a mellow bowl designed for beginner-to-intermediate skaters, a central street plaza with a variety of obstacles like handrails, steps, and ledges, and several quarter pipes along one side of the park. The design also includes unique features, such as a roller-to-bank obstacle that pays homage to Bakersfield's iconic "Welcome to Bakersfield" arch.
The funding for the skatepark was part of a larger effort by the City of Bakersfield to revitalize local parks and create spaces for youth to safely engage in recreational activities. Lights were installed to allow for nighttime skating, making it accessible during various hours.
Since its opening, Planz Park Skatepark has become a vital part of the Bakersfield skate scene, drawing skaters from around the region due to its high-quality design and thoughtful features. Photos courtesy of SpohnRanch skateparks.
