Ramputene DIY Skatepark: A Skater-Built Haven in San Sebastián

From Abandoned Lot to Thriving Skate Community – The Story of Ramputene DIY

Nestled beneath a highway overpass in Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain, Ramputene DIY Skatepark stands as a testament to the dedication and passion of the local skateboarding community. Established in 2017, this skatepark transformed a neglected, debris-filled area into a vibrant hub for skaters, especially during the region's frequent rains.

The initiative began with local skaters, including Peye and Urtzi, who envisioned a sheltered space for skateboarding. They, along with others like Imanol Muñoz, spearheaded the cleanup and construction efforts, turning the once-abandoned spot into a functional skatepark. The project faced initial challenges, including local resistance and vandalism, but the community's perseverance led to its eventual success.

The skatepark has become a focal point for the local skate scene, hosting events like "The Tournament," which attracts skaters from various regions. Fundraising efforts, including parties and merchandise sales, have been instrumental in supporting the park's development and maintenance. During the pandemic, a GoFundMe campaign further bolstered resources, highlighting the community's commitment to the space.

Ramputene has been featured in publications such as Confusion Magazine, which focuses on DIY skate spots worldwide. Notable skaters, including Diego Doural and Yankee, have showcased their skills at the park, contributing to its growing reputation in the skateboarding community. The park was highlighted in Issue 31, showcasing its unique design and the community's efforts in its construction.

The success of Ramputene is attributed to the collective efforts of local skaters and supporters. Individuals like Imanol Muñoz played pivotal roles in motivating and organizing the community, while others contributed through construction, fundraising, and event organization. Their combined dedication has transformed Ramputene into a cherished skate destination.
